Spring brings new beginnings

By on April 18, 2011

It’s Spring.  Depending on where you live it feels more like Spring is coming but on the last sputters of engine fuel, yet we still hold to the belief that it’s coming.  The Spring season brings with it a cleansing of the old and room for the new.  We plant flowers, do an eyeball review of last year’s lawn chairs and cushions.  We also look over the grill and begin to make mental notes of when we will cook out, who we will invite and what we will serve.

For me, it also means I look through clothing and other piles of “stuff” that has accumulated over the cold winter months.  It is also an opportunity to move out some old career stuff to make room for some new career stuff.  What should you move out?  Well, let’s see ….. how’s your work attitude?  Are you happy where you are? Are you comfortable with the company you work for?  There is no wrong or right answer.  There is, however, time to take a clear look at yourself.  If you haven’t been promoted it can be blamed on the recession, but if you haven’t been given any additional responsibilities or chosen for more demanding projects – there is something wrong.  When was the last time you took some training?  Have you learned anything to improve your skills and value at work?  How is your appearance?  Do you look like the recession is looming over you?  Pull yourself together.  Just because there’s no room in the budget for a promotion doesn’t mean you can’t promote yourself and carry yourself accordingly.

What’s going on at your desk?  If it is neat and tidy does that really mean you are organized?  Not necessarily.  It could mean you don’t have much on your desk because you don’t do more than you have to while you’re there.  A clean desk doesn’t always give off the signal of organization to the Organization.  When was the last time you said ‘hello’ to the mail team or the administrative assistants?  Do you ever go over to the IT department and put a face to the name that calls them all the time. [Sorry about that reference, I work in IT and we wonder how you look sometimes!]

Spring cleaning is not restricted to the home, the yard, or your closet.  Spring is a time to start anew.  Start a new path toward your career success.  Maybe even possibly assess whether this career still suits the person you are right now.  Hmm? Spring brings with it the opportunity for revision of the plan.

Make sure you take advantage of Spring by creating your own new beginnings.
