You Simply Gotta Be Social Media Savvy

By on May 16, 2011

A word from the wise… you must begin to realize that social media is an ever growing epidemic and just as you are using it every day to suit your needs, so are employers, business prospects, institutions, and organizations.

I know, I know. You didn’t think a second thought about posting that photograph of you and Aunt Emma taking Jello shots at last year’s family reunion. It didn’t cross your mind that a possible employer might go check out your facebook profile as she was reviewing your application and now thinks that you may not be the best fit for running the financial department.

And if it isn’t crossing your mind that professional contacts may be doing some detective work online, I can almost guarantee your teenage daughter doesn’t realize that college recruiters are doing it as well.

It is time to be selective of the information you are allowing the world to see. Just as you have been schooled to consider how you present yourself in a live interview, you must now take into consideration how you present yourself online as well.

Some helpful tips … consider what you are posting to the world. If you are an emotional soup for one reason or another, probably best to keep that private and turn to your intimate support group to hash out the details or find a shoulder to lean on. Also consider what photographs you are posting in a public online photo album. Are the photos something you would be comfortable and proud to show your mother? If it passes that test, you are probably okay.

I suggest you head on back to all of your social media outlets at this time and take a quick peek. It is spring after all and that is the best time to get some cleaning done.

Great words of wisdom! Our virtual resume speaks way louder than our paper resume.

It is so important to stay on top of it… raising our awareness and those of our children and loved ones is important on this topic. Times are changing… :)

I have an online mission statement & always make sure my posts are in alignment with it before I hit the share button. I also realize that my friends are full of family, kids, colleagues and potential people to date ~ so I am mindful that my posts are appropriate to all :) Thanks Kerry, good info that I wish all to know! LOVE YOU!

Great habit to get into, Jodi! Having an online mission statement and staying in alignment with it is very wise. Sets an environment for you to have to do less clean-up :)

      Blessings,

      Kerry
