Carole King has been making music all of her life; decades of hit songs and awards have made her a household name — and an American music legend. Known for her unique voice and soulful lyrics, she has defied genre and label, and throughout the years has continued to blaze her own musical path. Never one to quit, album after album she continues to break the mold – and to the joy of her fans around the world, seems prepared to continue to explore new musical avenues with every recording.
This season she brought the world a very special gift of her own, as she released her first ever holiday album, A Holiday Carole. The CD is a work of love, and an intimate project as well, as King’s daughter, Louise Goffin, holds the title of producer. The project is a unique mix of classic holiday tunes and original compositions; melding a variety of tempos and sounds in its catalogue, the album is – delightfully — anything but ordinary. While King wrote none of the songs on the album, she makes each and every track her own — as only she could.
Holiday staples such as “Carol of the Bells,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear” are given a Carole King twist, making each stand out as something other than just another Christmas song. Fun, peppy beats on new songs like “Christmas Paradise” and “Christmas in the Air” gives the album a modern twist; and the beautiful “New Year’s Day” written especially for Carole, harkens back to her signature rock n’ soul feel. Another interesting addition is her “Chanukah Prayer,” a genuinely unique song that displays her range and diversity.
A dynamic album that transcends genre and offers a pleasing blend of traditional and contemporary, A Holiday Carole reminds us exactly why Carole King is the quintessential musician’s musician: an artist capable of bringing joy to the world — regardless of what season she’s in.
