Kindle or Cable? A guide to all things entertainment

Coming Soon to a TV Near You

It’s that time of the year again. School is back in session. Seasons are changing, and with that come big changes in television entertainment. But which shows are returning and what’s brand-new? We’ve done the research for you!

What’s Back.

If you’re a fan of NBC, you’ll be happy to know that shows like 30 Rock, Chuck, and Law and Order: SVU will be returning to your television screens soon. The Office will be back for its seventh season on September 23. However, it’s been confirmed that this will be the final season for Steve Carell (who plays the role of Michael Scott). Also, Ron Howard’s remake of Parenthood will be back for its sophomore season on September 21.

FOX has a full schedule this fall with primetime favorites like Glee, House, Fringe, and American Dad all renewed for another season. If you’re into crime-solving science, Bones returns for its sixth season on Thursday, September 23.

Criminal Minds

CBS will welcome back all three of its CSI shows, as well as The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, and Criminal Minds. The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker and Robin Tunney, comes back for its third season this September. Both NCIS and its sister show, NCIS: Los Angeles, will be returning as well.

Desperate Housewives is returning this fall to ABC, along with Modern Family, Castle, and The Bachelor. Get your tin foil hats out because “V” is coming back for a second season. The show tells the story of an alien race that comes to earth and the humans who fight against them to save humanity.

What’s New.

Along with the return of your favorite TV shows, the networks are introducing some new competition for your lineups. Here’s some we think you might want to look into.

ABC’s Better With You is a comedy about a family of three couples in very different life stages. The parents have been happily married for 35 years. Their oldest daughter has been dating for nine years but doesn’t see the point of getting married, and the youngest daughter is engaged after only seven and a half weeks of dating. Better With You premieres September 22.

FOX is introducing a new drama called Lone Star, the story of a man living two separate lives with two different women, and his struggle to break free from his own con. Lone Star deals with issues like corruption, greed, and deception, and will be coming to the small screen on September 20.

If spy shows are more your forte, be sure to check out Undercovers, which is coming to NBC on September 22. Undercovers is the story of two secret agents who get married and become an unstoppable spy duo.

Other new shows coming this fall include ABC’s Body of Proof and My Generation, NBC’s Love Bites, and CBS’s The Defenders and Hawaii Five-O.

With so many new shows coming to your television screen and so many favorites returning, you won’t want to miss a night of great television entertainment! Who knew back-to-school time could be so much fun?

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Penguin Books, 2006

Eat, Pray, Love is a memoir of Gilbert’s journey to find peace in her life after a tumultuous divorce. She takes a year of her life to spend in three very different areas of the world — Italy, India, and Indonesia. Each chapter, or “tale,” is about her experiences on any given day of her journey to find harmony in her new life. Thanks to the rich and wonderful food in Italy, she adds a few pounds; upon her departure from India, she has discovered ways to calm her mind; and at the end of her year-long journey, she realizes that God is always with each and every one of us, will never leave us, and will always love us.

I have mixed feelings about this book because in the beginning, there is a significant amount of foul language. However, as Gilbert moves through her journey, this language becomes almost nonexistent. The end result seems to be a good one, and besides, who am I to cast the first stone?
