Five light bites that may be undermining your goal weight.

A new wave of food fads is upon us! While some of these snacks may seem to be healthful, they may be undoing all your hard dietary work. Be mindful and munch in moderation with these magnificent morsels.

Hummus

Hey chickpea! Hummus is a great source of dietary fiber and serves as a complete protein when paired with bread. One tablespoon of this tasty paste has around 30 calories so if you are polishing off the entire tub and calling it dinner, you are doing your hips a disservice. Since I know you are ignoring the raw veggies that should be accompanying your nibble, step away from the open bag of pita chips! Only allow yourself 2-3 tablespoons of this particular provision to ward off your hunger pangs.

Nut Mixes

You are such a nut! Those nut mixes are so hot right now, but be considerate not to overdose on this crunchy treat. Although nuts contain a considerable amount of vitamins, essential amino acids, and healthy fats, a lot of blends commingle with dried fruits or chocolate covered bits so the calories can add up fast. Not to mention that nuts themselves are densely caloric. Don’t be greedy; all you need is a handsome handful of this nutritious nosh.

Kale Chips

Kale will not fail! It is high in beta-carotene, vitamins K and C, and super rich in calcium. Additionally, it has potent anti-cancer properties. So, eat up! However, be careful with the dehydrated variety that have been covered with yummy sodium laden ingredients like garlic powder and sea salt. If you are mowing an entire bag of kale chips in one sitting and telling yourself that it’s healthy, well, it’s not. You may as well eat a hot dog. A whole bag of anything is never a prudent plan. Portion control, dear.

Gluten-free crackers

Hollerin’ and hootin’ for non-gluten! There are so many gluten-free cracker options out there that are super-delicious. However, since they are void of that binding agent that is so very filling, it is easy to get carried away and ingest a half of bag in a hurry. While they satisfy the need for a salty crunch, they lack in the belly-filling department. Pay attention to the portion sizes on the side of the box and don’t leave the kitchen with that bag in hand. No ma’am.

Nut Butters

What’s up Butter Nut? That almond butter is not pudding so put that spoon away. When you are eating clean and craving something rich, sometimes you may find yourself with a jar of your favorite nut butter in hand, devouring it as if it’s ice cream. Nut butters can certainly satisfy a sweet tooth by the spoonful, but that’s all you should be eating. Spread it on a piece of toast or on some celery sticks, but please ration it out. Nut butter over-indulgence will surely leave you feeling guilty. And remember, Nutella is not health food so back away slowly from that open jar of hazelnut dreams.
