Reflection, Thankfulness, and Showing Gratitude

What are you thankful for?

Sitting back and reflecting on what you’re thankful for is a great way to realize just how fortunate you are in any given particular situation. But, this shouldn’t be just around Thanksgiving time. Instead developing a daily routine of practicing gratitude can be very beneficial for your well-being. According to Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of the Journal of Positive Psychology, regular grateful thinking can increase happiness by as much as 25 percent and reduces depression. He said women tend to be most grateful; 52 percent of women express gratitude on a regular basis versus 44 percent of men.

From the very big to the very small experiences, no matter how bad things seem to be, you can always find something to be grateful for. Women can be thankful for many things, such as makeup, shoes, a good book, a little peace and quiet, waking up every day, life’s basic necessities (food, water and shelter), good health, abundant lifestyle, family, independence and career. The list can go on and on.

What are you grateful for? According to a survey by the John Templeton Foundation:

  • 69 percent of people are grateful when something unexpectedly good happens
  • 62 percent of people are regularly grateful for their children and family
  • 52 percent of people are regularly grateful to God
  • 49 percent of people try to feel gratitude every day for something simple like a sunset
  • 16 percent of people say it takes something out of the ordinary for them to feel gratitude

When we want to show gratitude for the things we are thankful for, we tend to think something big and grandiose is needed. However, even the smallest things can make a big difference and usually it is the thought that counts.  Some typical ways to show gratitude might be to simply tell someone face-to-face how much you appreciate what they’ve done for you or given to you, write them a thank you note or provide them with something that would be near and dear to their heart. But for those who might want to get a little more creative, you can give back in the manner of which you are grateful. For instance, some of the things I am thankful for include family, health, the ability to work from home and being in a position to help others in whatever capacity I can.

Regarding family, always make time for your family. Make it a point to spend time with them more than the usual visit here and there if at all possible. In my case, we try to take advantage of every birthday, kid’s sport event, holiday, or long day weekend by gathering for dinner or planning a family getaway. In fact, we’ve made it a family tradition to go camping every Thanksgiving and to alternate hosting Christmastime. As it relates to my health, the ability to work from home and being in a position to help others both physically and financially, I have positioned myself to be able to give back by educating and coaching on and helping those with similar interests build health and wellness businesses. I am truly grateful that I am able to share the gift of health and financial wellness. What are you grateful for?
