Eyes to Kill: Is spending $30 on mascara really worth it?

Last summer one of my good friends spent a few nights at my home while visiting from Florida. We enjoyed spending time together catching up and sharing laughs over a few glasses of wine. I was sad to see her go, but she left me an amazing parting gift. Unbeknownst to both of us, my two-year old daughter raided my friend’s make-up bag and stashed away a few goodies in her crib. One of the items was Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara.

Ordinarily I would never advise you to use someone else’s mascara. However, I dare those of you with the strongest willpower to resist the temptation of Giorgio Armani. I went into my bathroom and opened the container. I knew instantly looking at the applicator that I was going to love this mascara. After the first coat, I was in love. My lashes, which normally lack length and thickness were transformed into the lush, long lashes I have always dreamed of having! I applied two more coats and called my friend to tell her that she was never going to see this mascara again. She gave me her blessing and was sweet enough to let me keep it. That is a good friend!

When choosing mascara, think about what you want the mascara to do. Do you want length, volume or curl? All three? The shape of the brush applicator at the end of the wand will help you accomplish your goal.

Desired Lash Effect: Longer lashes with a natural look

If your lashes are short and sparse, look for mascara with a brush applicator that is long and thin. Because of the shape, a thinner brush is able to comb through, separate and apply more product to each individual lash from the root to the tip.

My picks:

Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara

Maybelline Lash Discovery

E.L.F Lengthening and Defining Mascara

Desired Lash Effect: Volume and Curl

If your lashes are long, but you desire more fullness and curl, look for mascara with an applicator brush that is large and round with densely packed bristles.

My picks:

Fairy Drops Scandal Queen Mascara

Dior Show Iconic Mascara

Rimmel The Max Bold Curves Extreme Volume and Lift Mascara

Desired Lash Effect: Dramatic length and volume, with a rich deposit of color.

To create lashes that really stand out in a crowd look for mascara with an applicator brush that has full, bushy bristles. Nylon fibers are commonly used in these types of mascara applicators because they increase volume.

My picks:

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara

L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes

Timoria’s Tips:

I always wear waterproof formula mascara. If you lead an active lifestyle, fear smudging, or Heaven forbid the dreaded raccoon eyes, try waterproof mascara.

Most formulas are easy to clean off of your lashes during your evening skin care routine.

I suggest using Sephora Waterproof Eye Make-Up Remover applied onto a cotton pad to clean mascara and other eye make-up.

If you are fair-skinned with light hair and light eyelashes, try using dark brown mascara instead of black. You will get the depth you are looking for, but the result is more natural.

Be well, my friends.
