8 new ways to keep your look from melting and stay beautiful right into the fall.
In summer and early fall, less is more – especially when it comes to makeup. It’s the perfect time of the year to keep your makeup light and fresh, and allow your natural beauty to shine through. Start with summer shades of pink, coral and blue, and then try these other tips and products:
- If you’ve never used primer before, now is a good time to try one. It can increase the longevity of your makeup and reduce the appearance of big pores and fine lines. Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer ($36/Sephora) always ranks at the top of my list.
- Trade in your usual heavy foundation for a Tinted Moisturizer or Mineral Foundation. Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer ($42/department stores) is very lightweight, yet provides buildable coverage.
- L’Oréal Bare Naturals Mineral Foundation ($12.99/Ulta) comes in a mineral powder formula that is good for all skin types. It is also preservative and fragrance free.
- If you desire that sun-kissed look without roasting in the sun, fake it with a bronzer. Apply Physicians Formula® Organic Wear Bronzer ($12.39/Target) only to areas that the sun would naturally hit your face, such as your forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin. You can easily achieve this by adding some subtle highlights to the face with DuWop Doubleglow7. ($25/beauty.com)
- For your cheeks, Tarte Flush Cheek Stain ($30/Sephora) gives a beautiful flush of color that looks great on just about everyone, and it’s so easy to apply. If you prefer a powder formula, MAC Powder Blush ($18.50/maccosmetics.com) has a vast array of gorgeous colors for summer.
- Eyelids tend to get oily in the summer. Look for long-wearing eye shadows such as Revlon ColorStay Shadow ($6.99/Walgreens) and MAC Paint Pots ($16.50/maccosmetics.com) that can be used alone or under your powder eye shadow for staying power.
- Runny mascara and eyeliner are not attractive, so choose a waterproof formula. We recommend L’Oréal Extra Volume Collagen Plumping Waterproof Mascara ($7.99/CVS) and Maybelline’s Unstoppable Eyeliner ($6.99/Walgreens), which are both ophthalmologist-tested.
- You pack away your sweaters for the summer; do the same with your lip liners and opaque lipsticks. Try something like Laura Mercier’s Lip Stain ($20/department stores), and smudge the creamy formula on to your lips for a more natural look. It’s long-lasting, but won’t dry out your lips. If you are a gloss girl, Lip Fusion™ Color Shine ($38/Sephora) is highly addictive. It is a plumping and moisturizing gloss that comes in beautiful sheer colors and tastes yummy, too!
