Someone’s in the kitchen with Martha…and it isn’t Jesus!
Luke 10:41-42: But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; there is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion that which is to her advantage, which shall not be taken away from her.
Jesus was always welcome at Lazarus, Martha and Mary’s home. In Luke 10:40 we read Martha was distracted with “much serving”. She even asks Jesus to tell Mary to help her “serve”.
Jesus rebukes her and says Mary has chosen that good part which will not be taken away from her.
Mary was sitting and soaking at Jesus’ feet.
Right here, Jesus sets women free … again. He makes it clear it is okay not to be in the kitchen. It was not acceptable for women to sit at the Rabbi’s feet. They didn’t anoint the men’s feet or join in their gatherings. It was NOT culturally acceptable.
I’ve heard many ‘takes’ on these verses: “It is okay to do something else.” “Jesus didn’t really rebuke Martha.” “Yes, we can serve, that is what women were “created” for.”
Well, that is not what The Word says. When Jesus is present, it is best to sit at His feet.
Matthew 28:10, Go and tell my brethren… Jesus went to the women FIRST when he had risen from the dead. He commissioned them to go the men who were in hiding to tell them the good news.
In the Spirit, there is no male, female, race, position. We, as women, are on equal ground: a king, a priest, a prophet, a preacher, a teacher.
Only five verses in the Bible have shut women out of ministry, the church, and, their calling for centuries. It is time to rise up and be heard. Psalm 61:11 The Lord gives the word [of power]; the women who bear and publish [the news] are a great host. [Amplified.]
Isn’t it time to take your rightful place at the feet of Jesus? This month, find a woman in the Bible and study her life. Read all you can about her and see how God has always used women in powerful ways when they are ready to sit at His feet. Let’s jump into the fields that are white with harvest.
