The Fashionista Rules for Skin Care

My mother walked into our home exuding an immense amount of confidence after her spa day. Her smile lit up the room as she began to vividly describe her pampered experience. As the words escaped her lips I sat attentive while admiring the honey brown glow of her slender face. Beyond impressed by the services rendered, I inquired about the beautification process assuming that it would include expensive products. To my surprise the specialist followed four simple rules that we are all capable of doing at home.

The Fashionista Rules for skin care:

  • Rule 1: Cleansing- Start with the basics! Damp your face first with warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser, and then rinse with lukewarm water. Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both can cause broken capillaries). It’s extremely important to use a gentle face wash. Dermatologists often advise Cetaphil, its crème based and isn’t loaded with chemicals or perfumes that can irritate the skin. It can be found at your local drugstore for $10.00.
  • Rule 2: Exfoliate- Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. It is extremely beneficial because it removes the cells that are clinging on, revealing the fresher, younger skin cells below. Start by damping your face with water and then use a loofah, exfoliating gloves or a synthetic scrubbing sponge designed for the face. Rub your face with the loofah or sponge using circular motions and then rinse with warm water. Note: Avoid scrubbing under the eyes, the skin there is thin and can easily be damaged by abrasive cleansers.
  • Rule 3: Moisturize- No matter your skin type, we should all moisturize. Moisturizers prevent and treat dry skin and on the most basic level, moisturizers hold water in the outermost layer of the skin leaving your skin hydrated and looking youthful.
  • Rule 4: Apply Sunscreen- The number-1 cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it’s important to use sunscreen even in the winter and on cloudy days. Sunscreens are chemical agents that help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. SPF 15 is the best for general use.
  • Rule 5: Beauty is skin deep - Scripture says “Beauty is fleeting” which means that aging is inevitable. However, your most important attribute is on the inside. So when others see your beautiful warm summer glow, it will actually be God’s light radiating through you.

Go forth and be gorgeous! ?
